What is social safety?
Diamond and Alley (2022) explain that social safety refers to our human needs for "reliable social connection, inclusion, and protection."
Why is social safety so important now?
Frost et al. (2023) compiled evidence and explained how prejudiced events, which demonstrate a lack of social safety, lead to toxic, measurable stress described by the minority stress model. Chronic stress causes adverse health outcomes, so substance use becomes a logical, if maladaptive, way to calm anxiety, numb pain, and escape hostile environments.
Why is this important for Erie, Huron, and Lorain counties?
Peer Recovery Supporters can incorporate this research into affording more affirming, sober, social environments in Erie, Huron, and Lorain counties. This is an opportunity to build stronger sober-friendly communities to support human needs and professionals in the recovery community.
